The big news unleashed to the Trek world today was that Whoopi Goldberg would be reprising her role of Guinan on the second season of Star Trek: Picard.
It’s unclear if this announcement was known to Goldberg before Sir Patrick Stewart himself announced it live on The View. See for yourself:
While on the media blitz to promote his new show, Stewart paused for a moment and said that he was on The View with a special invitation from Trek boss Alex Kurtzman. They want Whoopi to reprise her role as Guinan. The crowd exploded with cheers.
Though some of us had an inkling that this might be in the works, this news is great for Trek fans. Guinan was a mysterious character in The Next Generation and her back story was never quite fleshed out. During the very first appearance of the Borg (Q Who), Guinan warned Picard and the crew of how she and her race of El-Aurians were forced to relocate in the face of the technological threat.
Guinan also seemed to have knowledge of Q himself, and struck an interesting pose when Q drew near. That has led to much speculation, on what Guinan’s powers might be.
Star Trek: Picard – Season 2 was announced just a few weeks back.
