Rumor was that Paramount was looking over its shoulder as the upstart Babylon 5 was in development. Or, another rumor was that they needed a new show to debut as The Next Generation cast got called up to the Silver Screen. That one sounds more plausible, as the Babylon 5 aired after Deep Space Nine, which broke new ground in science fiction storytelling and featured the first Trek show not centered around a starship. After a few rough seasons, and an injection of Klingon, DS9 found its stride and became a beloved addition to the Trek family and canon.
